What to Expect Before and After Dermal Fillers
Before Your Appointment
Before treatment:
Tell your injector about all prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, and supplements you use
Do not stop prescription medications or medically necessary blood thinners unless instructed by the healthcare professional who prescribed them
Avoid alcohol before treatment if advised by your provider
Tell us if you have a history of cold sores before lip or perioral treatment
Avoid scheduling filler immediately before a wedding, photoshoot, vacation, or other major event
Follow any treatment-specific preparation instructions provided by your injector
After Your Appointment
Temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness, redness, or firmness can occur after dermal filler treatment.
Your injector will provide personalized aftercare instructions. General recommendations may include:
Avoid unnecessary touching, pressure, or massage on treated areas unless instructed otherwise
Use a cool compress if recommended
Avoid intense exercise, saunas, steam, and excessive heat for approximately 24–48 hours if advised
Sleep slightly elevated if swelling is noticeable
Allow time for swelling to decrease before evaluating your final result
Contact the practice if you experience symptoms that concern you
Although serious complications are uncommon, accidental injection of filler into a blood vessel can cause serious tissue or vision complications.
