Laser Hair Removal
Astoria Esthetics offers professional hair reduction treatments in Astoria, Queens, using the Candela® machine. Treatments are customized based on your skin tone, hair color, treatment area, and individual goals to help reduce unwanted facial and body hair over a series of sessions. Complimentary consultations and patch tests are available before beginning treatment.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Hair-removal treatments use targeted light energy that is absorbed by pigment in the hair. The energy converts to heat and damages targeted hair follicles, helping reduce future hair growth.
Because individual hairs grow at different times, multiple sessions are necessary. Treatments are scheduled over a series so that additional hairs can be targeted as they enter an active growth stage.
Astoria Esthetics uses the Candela® Nordlys™ platform, which includes specialized SWT® IPL applicators designed for hair removal. Your provider selects treatment settings according to your skin tone, hair characteristics, and treatment area.
What Areas Can We Treat?
Hair reduction can be performed on many areas of the face and body, including:
Face & Neck — upper lip, chin, sideburns, face, and neck
Underarms & Arms — underarms, half arms, and full arms
Bikini Area — bikini line, extended bikini, and Brazilian
Legs — thighs, lower legs, and full legs
Upper Body — chest, abdomen, shoulders, and back
Treatment suitability depends on your hair color, skin tone, medical history, and the area being treated.
Hair reduction happens gradually rather than after a single appointment.
In general:
After treatment: temporary redness or small bumps around follicles may occur
Following days: treated hairs gradually begin to shed
After several sessions: hair may become finer, lighter, and less dense
Full treatment series: more significant reduction develops as additional growth cycles are treated
Maintenance: occasional treatments may be recommended depending on regrowth and hormonal factors
Many patients require approximately six or more treatments to achieve their desired reduction, although the number and spacing of sessions varies by treatment area and individual hair growth.
Results are best described as long-term or permanent hair reduction, rather than a guarantee that every treated hair will disappear permanently.
When Will I See Results?
Is Hair Removal Treatment Right for Me?
Light-based hair removal works by targeting pigment within the hair, which means hair color, skin tone, and contrast between the two can influence treatment effectiveness.
Dark, coarse hair generally responds most predictably. Blonde, white, gray, and some red hair may not contain enough pigment to respond effectively.
During your consultation, your provider will evaluate your skin and hair and review your medical history to determine whether treatment is appropriate.
Tell your provider if you:
Have recently tanned or used self-tanner
Have an active infection, rash, open wound, or irritation in the treatment area
Take medications or supplements that may increase photosensitivity
Have a history of abnormal scarring or keloids
Have a photosensitivity disorder
Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Currently use or recently used isotretinoin
Have undergone another recent cosmetic treatment in the area
Have a hormonal condition that may affect hair growth
If your hair characteristics are unlikely to respond effectively, we'll discuss that with you before you purchase a treatment series.

Temporary redness, warmth, sensitivity, or follicular swelling may occur after treatment.
General aftercare may include:
Use a cool compress if recommended
Protect exposed treated areas from the sun
Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher as directed
Avoid excessive heat, saunas, steam, and intense exercise for the period recommended by your provider

-
Many clients require a series of approximately six or more treatments, although the exact number depends on your hair color, density, growth cycle, treatment area, skin tone, and individual response.
-
Treatment intervals vary by body area and hair-growth pattern. Sessions are commonly scheduled 4-6 weeks apart, and your provider will recommend the appropriate interval for the area being treated.
-
Sensation varies by treatment area and individual sensitivity. Many people describe treatment as brief warmth or snapping sensations like a rubber band. Your provider will adjust settings appropriately and explain what to expect before starting.
-
Hair removal can be performed on a range of skin tones when an appropriate device, treatment settings, and experienced provider are used. Your skin type is evaluated during your consultation, and a patch test may be performed before treatment.
-
Hair-removal technology relies on pigment within the hair. White, gray, blonde, and some red hair generally respond poorly because there may not be enough pigment for the device to effectively target.
-
Yes. Shaving is generally preferred between treatments because it removes hair above the skin while leaving the follicle available for subsequent treatment. Avoid waxing, plucking, and threading between sessions.
